You may ask yourself if there is a method or formula to displaying the Facebook Friends List Order on your Facebook profile or how is it determined? I have seen the photos and names there of friends that I have not spoken to directly in a while and others that I communicate with regularly.
According to Don Dodge on The Next Big Thing in his article “How does Facebook decide which 10 friends to display on your profile?” he states:
“The list of friends displayed changes slightly every time you visit your Facebook page. It appears random, but it isn’t. Facebook says they use an algorithm that takes into account the people who interact most with you publicly. Things like posts they make on your wall, photos where both of you are tagged, events you both attend, comments on each others posts or photos, etc.”
Facebook tries to keep the list updated and to show only persons they think you would be most likely to interact or communicate with in this list.
But, there must be more to this. Every time I check my Facebook profile page I scan down to where my friends are displayed. Every one of those people are friends that I have recently interacted with on some level. I refreshed the page a couple times and another set of people are displayed. I try to think of any “interactions” I recently had with them. Some are obvious, some are not. Serendipity and randomness must play a part. Is it scary that Facebook seems to know who we care about, and who cares about us…but we don’t know how they know this? For me it is more thought provoking than scary. Hmmm…how do they really do this?
As far as I understand the Facebook Friends List Order has some sort of formula involved and also some form of random picking of names to keep it interesting. I have seen that even if I don’t communicate directly with a friend but we do communicate and post on the same thread of a common friend then their name and photo will appear on my Facebook Friend list but to date I cant figure out a specific order.
